Trout Lake’s classic appeal
Created in 1926, for a 100 years Trout Lake has offered golfers an opportunity to experience the timeless nature of a great game. With holes devised by the club’s founders, the course rambles through incredible vistas of natural rivers and lakes. It is always engaging and thoroughly enjoyable in the way great designs are for players of all abilities. You won’t find forced carries that make the game overly challenging; instead, Trout Lake offers a great opportunity to test your abilities, connect with friends, and make memories that will last a lifetime.
The Reimagination of Trout Lake
This significant renovation of Trout Lake has modernized the course and implemented a Golden Age of Golf philosophy. New green surrounds and tee boxes on every hole collectively create a more challenging and playable course, making the game more rewarding and enjoyable for our guests. All holes received a facelift to address severe doglegs and other limiting conditions, creating new holes that opened up more space and sight lines, thereby providing more strategic shot options.
Timeless Golf
Five completely new holes (4, 6, 7, 8, 13) and five reconfigured holes (2, 9, 11, 16, 18) are among the significant changes. The renovation focused on major improvements to the green complexes: broader landing areas were constructed, bunkers were removed and reconfigured, elevation changes and major irrigation improvements provide more shot options around the greens. Several new signature greens have been added, such as the new Redan at Hole No. 11, the Biarritz at No. 9 (based on North Berwick’s West Links), and a double plateau green on No. 8 (from the work of design legend CB Macdonald).
Tree management was also implemented, with trees removed and replaced across the course, opening scenic views of the Trout River that flows out of nearby Trout Lake. The course meanders through stands of majestic oaks, white pine, birch, and balsam fir around wetlands, and up and down rolling hills through the Northwoods.
“Our focus in building the master plan for Trout Lake was to preserve the natural landscape and environment, maintain the characteristics of the Golden Age of Golf, while building the type of features and amenities expected of more modern golf courses. We believe we found the perfect balance of these objectives and a design that is unique to the history and character of Trout Lake. We made a commitment to the next 100 years of Trout Lake, and based on the initial feedback from our guests, we have created a design that is getting great reviews from golfers of every age and caliber.”
